AMEC engineered new facility for Alcan in China

Location:Tianjin, China
Client:Alcan
Scope:Mechanical engineering design including industrial ventilation, heat removal, air-conditioning and industrial compressed air, review of local design institute detailed design
Date:2008 - 2009

Alcan required a new aluminium cable facility in Tianjin, China. AMEC was selected to provide the mechanical engineering design which included the industrial ventilation, heat removal, air-conditional and industrial compressed air. The new facility was based on existing facilities in North America. One of the key objectives which the new facility had to deliver was improved operators’ comfort and heat removal with innovative, cost and energy efficient design solutions.

Key functional areas

  • Rod Mill building including melting and holding furnaces, rod coilers, rod rewind and ingot storage
  • Cable Mill building including annealing furnaces, drawbenches, armour machines, extrusion lines, jacketing lines, cablers
  • Shipping and receiving
  • Substation
  • Gas fired boilers
  • Administration building

AMEC ensured there was energy efficient use of building architectural features and local ambient conditions to achieve required heat removal requirements. As well as use of natural ventilation and stratification effect and localised evaporative coolers and extraction to ensure optimum working conditions for operators while minimising capital and operational costs.
