AMEC delivers emissions control project for Southern Company
|Location:||Carrolton, Georgia, US|
|Value:||(Project) US$650 million (AMEC) US$133 million|
Plant Wansley in Carrolton, Georgia, has two coal-fired boiler units and two combined cycle gas-fired units. Units one and two were retrofitted with one scrubber per unit to significantly reduce sulphur oxide emissions. The major challenge was the completion of the design phase in a compressed schedule while keeping the two power plant units running at all times except for scheduled outages.
AMEC was responsible for the field installation of a new emissions control project. The project scope included installation of a lime processing system, ball mills, flue gas dampers and bypass system with 8 – 1,000 booster fans, over 5,300 tons of process ductwork, two new jet bubbling reactors (JBR) with supporting electrical and control systems.
The JBR’s are the world’s largest field spun fibreglass vessels at 120 feet in diameter. AMEC was responsible for complete assembly of the scrubber internals and assembly of the main structure. This included the field fabrication of outlet duct, installation and assembly of transition duct, cone, mist eliminator internals and gas cooling zone along with the internal piping systems and mechanical installation of four new 30' diameter agitators and drive systems. The project included the installation of over 50,000 field lamination kits.
