Our relationship with General Electric (GE) goes back over twenty years in providing engineering services on primarily simple cycle combustion turbine projects. Over the years, we developed a good understanding of GE’s requirements. Because of this knowledge, GE contracted AMEC to provide the balance of plant design for the Broad River 830 MW simple cycle gas turbine peaking plant.
The scope of AMEC's design services consisted of all balance of plant design for support of the installation of five GE frame combustion turbine generators. This included site development, fuel delivery facilities (natural gas and distillate fuel), and all electrical, piping and foundations required.
AMEC completed the design for SkyGen’s Broad River Energy Center, units one through three in late 1999 and was awarded a contract by GE to add units four and five in the spring of 2000, for start-up by May 2001.
The plant is now capable of generating approximately 850 MW of electrical power on an intermittent basis to provide additional power for distribution by Duke Energy during periods of high electrical power demands.
