Graduate Australia


What is the application process?
Go to amec.com/careers and click on the ‘Search for jobs’ in the Graduates and trainees/ Australia zone. Select the position that interests you, and then click the ‘Apply to Job’ button at the bottom of the job description. Graduate positions are normally open in February / March each year.

I applied a couple of years ago, can I apply again?
You are eligible for our graduate program if you graduated less than three years ago. You may reapply if you have not already been unsuccessful during the current recruitment cycle and if you have enhanced your skills and experience since your last application.

How will I know if my application is suitable?
If you haven’t passed the first screening, you will receive an email advising you that you have not been successful. If you do pass the first stage, one of our team members will contact you by telephone or email to organize a first interview.

Do you recruit graduates who need work permits?
We are unable to consider your application if you do not have a valid and current ongoing right to work in Australia. Student visas and other visas requiring an employer sponsor are not sufficient for us to progress your application.

Can I speak to someone in the engineering discipline to which I am applying to find out more information?
If you are invited in for an interview, you will be able to speak to the interviewers – who are generally from your discipline. Should you be made an offer of employment and would like to speak to a manager or graduate from that department prior to commencing, we can organize a meet up or phone conversation.

Is there a flexible start date?
Our graduates normally commence employment with us in January of the following year; however the start date is mutually agreeable between the preferred candidate and the manager. 

What is the duration of the graduate program?
The program is nominally a three-year program however can extend between three to four years in duration. The actual duration depends on how swiftly and efficiently the graduate acquires the required competencies and skills to work independently as an engineer.

Where will I be based?
Our graduate positions are based in one of our Perth offices. You may be required to travel to site depending on the projects that you are assigned to. This could be within Australia or overseas.

What training and development do you provide to graduates?
Graduates are encouraged to register with Engineers Australia to pursue chartered status.  Supervisors and mentors will provide you with the support and guidance required in completing career episodes and other requirements to this goal. AMEC also has a suite of internal courses that employees can go on.

Will I be given responsibility from the start?
All AMEC graduates are encouraged to work on real projects from day one. You will be given some responsibility in the initial phase of the program, and this will increase as your experience grows.

What if I need advice on my work and professional development?
Throughout the program, you will be assigned a mentor who will be your focal point for any advice and assistance required. Your mentor will also be responsible for introducing you to the Engineering work network and will be there just to bounce ideas off.

Will I have the opportunity to move around to other departments and have exposure to other areas of the business?
The program consists of three main rotations in engineering design, project engineering and fabrication and construction. Time spent on each rotation will vary on your interests and on the projects available at the time. You will be encouraged to spend the most amount of time on the engineering design rotation where possible.
