What is the application process?

Go to amec.com/careers and click on the ‘Search graduate jobs’ in the Graduates and trainees / UK zone. Select the position that interests you, then click the Apply to job button at the bottom of the job description. If there are no graduate jobs posted, then try coming back a bit later. We normally post new graduate jobs in early October.

When do you recruit for graduate positions in the UK?

Our main recruitment campaigns usually commence in October and November for the following year, but the schedule varies slightly across our different businesses. Please check our Graduate job board for specific closing dates.

What type of graduates are you looking for?
In particular we are looking for graduates as follows:

Engineering: Civil / Structural, Electrical / Instrumentation and Controls, Mechanical / Piping, Process / Chemical, Technical Safety

plus: Commercial Management / Quantity Surveying, Chemistry, Physics, Human Factors, Project Controls, Supply Chain management.

Can I apply for more than one graduate position?
Yes, you can apply for as many positions as you want. You should however, check that you are suitably qualified for each position and would be prepared to relocate to the area where the position is based. You should also check which business you want to work in eg Natural Resources Europe & West Africa; Power & Process Europe; or Environment & Infrastructure.

I applied a couple of years ago – can I apply again?
You may reapply if you have not already been unsuccessful during the current recruitment cycle and if you have enhanced your skills and experience since your last application.

How will I hear if my application is suitable?
If you haven’t passed the first screening, you will receive an email advising you that you have not been successful. If you do pass the first stage, one of our team will contact you by telephone or email to organise a first interview.

What is the selection process and when?
Again this varies depending on which AMEC business you have applied to.

• Natural Resources Europe & West Africa: Interviews take place from November through to February. Each interview will last for around one hour and will be conducted by an HR Advisor and a representative from the appropriate discipline. We aim to make interviews informal but thorough and it’s an ideal chance for you to find out more about us. Once the interview process is complete we will contact you to let you know if we are taking your application further. If you have passed this second stage we will invite you to attend an Assessment Centre during March. If invited, you will receive full details at that stage.
• Power & Process Europe: We conduct an Assessment Centre for our Graduate intake in April of each year. These would generally run over one day and would involve activities such as written case studies, observed team events, practical tests and interviews. If successful, a second interview may also be required. For our Nuclear sector, we recruit as opportunities arise and therefore interviews are held on an individual basis at a mutually convenient date and time. If successful you will be informed within one week of the interview.
• Environment & Infrastructure: We recruit throughout the year as and when opportunities become available. Therefore interviews are held on an individual basis at a convenient date and time.

Is there a flexible start date?
The start date is mutually agreeable but for Natural Resources Europe & West Africa and Power & Process Europe the majority of our graduates start work in September although for our Nuclear business, start dates can be flexible. However, eligibility for employment in the Nuclear business is dependant on a rigorous Security Vetting Process, which can take up to three months.

Again, for Environment & Infrastructure, start dates can be flexible

Where will I be based?
As we are a nationwide employer you will need to be flexible and mobile and may be expected to work all over the UK and Europe. Your normal place of work would depend on which area of the business you have expressed an interest in. For example, the majority of Graduate opportunities for Natural Resources Europe & West Africa will be based in either Aberdeen or London. Power & Process Europe would be based out of Darlington or Knutsford.

What training and development do you provide for graduates?
All graduates undertaking an engineering position will be registered on the appropriate accredited Professional Development Scheme e.g.
Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE)
Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE)
Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET)
Institution of Chemical Engineering (IChemE)
Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC)

We also offer Graduate Programmes for our Business Support Graduates in the following disciplines

Project Management
Project Controls
Commercial Management
Supply Chain Management

In addition, our Natural Resources business also offers a Professional Skills Development Programme leading to a Diploma in Management (accredited by the CMI) to all graduates

What is the duration of the Graduate Scheme?
It depends which scheme and which business you have applied for, but for most schemes the duration is four years. On-the-job learning will continue until your objectives are fully met and where appropriate, chartered status is achieved.

Will I be given responsibility from the start?
All AMEC graduates work on real jobs from day one. You will be given some responsibility in your initial phase, and this will increase as your experience grows.

Will I have the opportunity to move around to other departments and have exposure to other areas of the business?
Cross-functional career development opportunities exist where there is a mutual fit between your aspirations and the business need. We do prefer that our new graduates gain a firm grounding in the function they join before moving on. It’s up to you to determine how far you want to go with your career.

Do you recruit graduates who need Work Permits?
We are happy to consider applicants with Highly Skilled Migrant Visas. Unfortunately we are unable to consider your application if you do not have a valid and current ongoing right to work in the UK (eg Student Visas, Visas Requiring Sponsorship etc are not sufficient).

Can I speak to someone in the function to which I am applying to find out more information?
If you are invited for interview, you will be able to speak to the interviewers – who are generally from your discipline – and possibly some of our current graduates. Should you be made a job offer we will put you in contact with management and graduates in your area.
