What do you enjoy most about working for AMEC?
I enjoy the diverse nature of projects and opportunities that exist within AMEC, not only within the UK but also worldwide. In order to rise to the challenges that are brought about by these diverse opportunities, AMEC supports graduates through a structured graduate training programme, which enables graduates to work towards professional accreditation and chartered status with their respective institutions. However learning and development doesn’t stop after registration with the professional institutions. In order to maintain a portfolio of professional expertise, AMEC sponsor and offer further learning opportunities to employees, who have the ambition to progress their career to the next level. The continuous learning and development opportunities which exist within AMEC, make working for AMEC more rewarding and enjoyable.
What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on / or, what personal work achievement are you most proud of?
The most interesting project I have worked on is the South West Expansion Project, which was the upgrade of a gas compressor station. The upgrade included the EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) of a 16MW VSD (Variable Speed Drive) electrically driven compressor, provision of bi-directional flow to and from the compressor station and all associated gas and utilities pipework, valves, instrumentation and controls.
On this project, key achievement for me has been being a part of the core project delivery team throughout the design and construction phase of the project.
Being a key member of the site management team has enabled me to get involved with technical, commercial and personnel issues, giving me the opportunity to make a positive difference to project delivery. For me, this project has been an opportunity to apply my technical and management skills acquired during both my academic and practical development, enabling me to make a positive and effective contribution to the project and indeed to AMEC.
How would you describe the training you’ve received? How has it benefited you? In what other ways have you learned and developed as a professional?
My training requirements have aligned both with my short term ambition to become a chartered engineer and gain professional membership with the IMechE and has also aligned with my medium term ambition to become a first class project manger, after completing my MSc in project management.
Both, chartered membership with the IMechE and MSc in project management will enable me to contribute in raising the profile of project management within AMEC as well as fulfil the role of ambassador for AMEC by enhancing the perception to our clients and competitors of our professional engineering portfolio and our first class project management capabilities.
What would you say is the single most important factor in building a successful career at AMEC?
The single most important factor in building a successful career with AMEC, in my opinion, is continuous personal learning and development.
AMEC is a multi-national business with continuous growth and expansion at a global level. Bi-products of business growth include increased prosperity, diverse development and career progression opportunities, which in turn require a comprehensive skills set in order to remain competitive in our core market sectors and maintain our growth.
Continuous personal development and collaboration of a growing skills set is of mutual benefit to both employees and AMEC, as this will increase the speed and quality of transition for individuals with an ambition to progress from one career level to the next and will enable AMEC to maintain a professional portfolio in delivering a high class performance to our clients.
