AMEC wins major award from US Small Business Administration
03 May 2011
Atlanta, Ga. (3 May 2011) AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, has won the highly coveted 2011 Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence in Services contracting from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The award, AMEC’s second in five years, will be presented on May 19, during National Small Business Week, in Washington, D.C.
Named for the president under whose administration the SBA was founded, the award honors large federal prime contractors that have excelled in their utilization of small businesses as suppliers and subcontractors. It is a very exclusive award, as annually only one – and sometimes none – will be issued in the Services arena.
“Your hard work, innovative ideas and dedication to your community have helped you succeed,” wrote SBA Administrator Karen G. Mills. “The SBA is pleased to recognize your achievements and your role in driving our nation’s economic growth.”
Selection criteria for the award range from demonstrated management support of the small business program to outreach efforts and small business success stories. AMEC’s nomination highlighted many small business activities and successes, including:
- Receipt of four Department of Defense Nunn-Perry awards since 2002 for outstanding mentor-protégé teams with small businesses.
- Active corporate support and participation by President Hisham Mahmoud and other senior executives.
Over the past five years, AMEC has awarded nearly half of all subcontracted dollars on Federal projects to small businesses.
- The SBA gave AMEC the highest possible rating of “Outstanding” during its last Small Business Subcontracting Program compliance review in December 2009. It found that AMEC’s program could be used as a teaching model for other large businesses with similar requirements.
“We are very pleased to again be recognized for our commitment to the small business community, however much of the credit for this award belongs to our small business partners, whose diverse capabilities and quality work are instrumental in helping AMEC exceed our clients’ expectations,” stated Dr. Hisham Mahmoud, President of AMEC’s Earth & Environmental business.
The Eisenhower Awards annually are selected from nominations submitted by large government contractors. Some 2,500 contractors are eligible to submit nominations. The nominations are judged by a panel established by the SBA’s Associate Administrator for Government Contracting. AMEC’s previous win came in 2007.
