Human factors

AMEC has worked in the nuclear sector since the birth of the industry almost 60 years ago and today employs over 2,000 specialists in this field

New build / refurbishment

AMEC has 40 years experience working in nuclear and other high-hazard environments, applying Human Factors knowledge and techniques to reduce the risk of human error and enhance organisational processes and productivity. Our clients include government institutions, designers and owners of nuclear and other industry facilities. We also provide services to regulators in the UK, Eastern Europe, Russia, South Africa and Canada.

We provide human factors support and consultancy throughout the plant lifecycle, from new build to decommissioning projects. Our knowledge of UK and international human factors standards and practices, and regulatory requirements in the countries within which we operate, enables us to offer high quality practical solutions tailored to meet specific client needs. We help our clients to:

  • Integrate human factors into safety cases, reviews, and design activities (e.g. task, human error and reliability assessment)
  • Design systems, equipment and facilities which meet user requirements and minimise the potential for human error
  • Enhance safety culture through training, systematic assessment and practical improvements
  • Address specific human performance issues and challenges (e.g. procedure violations)
  • Develop effective training and procedure systems
  • Train managers and staff in human factors principles and techniques such as human performance, behavioural safety, management of change, risk management

Over the years, our Human Factors portfolio of work has grown from predominately individual Human Factors projects to management of work programmes, involving supply chain and multiple-stakeholder management. Many of our projects require effective collaboration between a large number of geographically-dispersed organisations, including other consultancies, government agencies and universities.
