The Sakhalin Energy consortium, which includes our customer Shell, is developing two massive offshore oil and gas fields on the Sakhalin island shelf, a remote location off the east coast of Russia. AMEC is contracted to provide design, engineering, procurement and project management services for two giant platform topsides.
Our client drives environmental protection and community relations, but we are working to support its efforts. Through the procurement process we have engaged local companies to supply equipment, and participated in a vendor assessment programme which has visited some 80 companies across Russia. We also employ local people in translation and support activities. AMEC employees in Sakhalin are supporting local orphanages for destitute children and their parents, by raising money and using our enhanced buying power to provide equipment and supplies.
Protection of the grey whales, which have feeding and breeding grounds around Sakhalin, is a key part of the environmental management of the project. Our environmental business was contracted to carry out environmental impact assessments and develop environmental protection plans for the earlier Sakhalin 1 project. As a result of our input, several changes were made to the design. The Sakhalin Energy consortium continues to monitor the whale population so it can investigate and address potential issues.
Our, and our client’s, environmental protection and community relations efforts have resulted in enhanced benefits to the local area and as little impact on the environment as is possible. This has resulted in increased acceptance of the project among local people and, to some extent, environmental and other pressure groups.
