As part of a drive towards increasing efficiency in energy consumption, the US government commissioned a sophisticated energy audit of all its army installations across 30 states, with the objective of achieving a reduction in energy use and therefore costs savings. As part of the energy saving exercise, the use of renewable energy sources had to be incorporated into the solution.
The challenges included the vast scale of the operations – over five million square feet – and setting best practice standards, which would lead the way for other facilities to follow. This had to be undertaken with the minimum disruption to the facility residents and within a very rigid time frame.
A team of AMEC people from across the business undertook an energy audit and designed and delivered an integrated plan which included solar power, wind power and alterations to various building designs to meet the requirements and minimise the energy usage.
We successfully met all the challenges set, and the resulting energy saving recommendations have since been implemented. These brought cost savings of nearly US$1 million to the federal government, and a 40 per cent reduction in the energy consumed across the facilities.
