Engaging the local community at the Malampaya power project in the Philippines
Although the Philippines is rich in natural resources, there are still energy shortages in large areas of the region. Working with our client, AMEC is helping address this by providing integrated asset support to the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power project, the largest industrial investment in the history of the Philippines. The project aims to provide a regular supply of natural gas to the region.

However, a key issue is ensuring the long-term sustainability of the project, in particular in relation to the local community. In order to ensure the project could be maintained over a long period, we needed to source the majority of the labour and skills from the local community and to ensure their safety throughout the life of the project. We were chosen because we are known for having sustainable values embedded in the culture and approach of the workforce, together with the ability to operate safely in remote environments.

The project is ongoing and has been extremely successful to date. It has been delivered on time and on budget, with over 85 per cent of the workforce coming from local labour, which has also had the added benefit of delivering significant cost savings to the client. A million hours have been achieved with no incidents. Investment in the local supply chain has resulted in improved capabilities and a more systematic approach to quality, delivery and safety.
