The town of Louisville, Kentucky needed an area of land on which it could construct a children’s home, but the only available land space near the city centre was a former stockyard that was blighted by contamination such as lead, arsenic and asbestos.
The project would have been abandoned, but AMEC came up with a solution that made it possible to reuse the site. We devised a remediation strategy that eliminated costly transportation and disposal of contaminated soil and included a long-term maintenance plan.
"It looked as if the environmental hazards would be too much to overcome," said Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson. “Thanks to AMEC’s environmental consultants, who used a number of innovative techniques to rid the site of contaminated materials, and a supportive community, the dream became a reality.” The site won a Phoenix Award, which are awarded annually by a panel of brownfield experts that includes representatives of state and national environmental regulatory agencies.
