AMEC provides project management and other related services to the Shanghai SECCO Petroleum Company Limited at its petrochemical and chemical derivatives plant near Shanghai. Adjacent to the plant is a small, undeveloped town, Caojing, where the local inhabitants’ livelihoods are based on subsistence farming and fishing.
As part of our commitment to provide support to the region, we invested considerable time working with the local population to help them improve their standard of living and the conditions in the town. One immediate problem that we could help solve was the issue of waste collection, which didn’t exist at all. This meant that the local inhabitants suffered from an increased level of disease and other problems linked to poor hygiene.
Working with the local government, we offered to build suitable waste storage facilities to solve this issue. We provided advice on the design and the building of hygienic waste collection units, which were built to very high standards and would meet the needs of the inhabitants into the future.
The results have been a significant improvement in the wellbeing of the local people and, in addition, since the waste is now stored in one place, it can be easily collected and removed on a regular basis, which was not possible before.
