AMEC conducted due diligence on an open-pit nickel mine in the Amazon Basin of Brazil. The mine, Onca Puma, aims to be a world-class operation, bringing employment, training and business benefits to the region.
An important aspect of planning any such major project is assessing its impact on the local community and the environment. Only by ensuring that it meets local needs will it be sustainable and win the support and cooperation of local people.
Because of our experience in working closely with local communities, we were selected to conduct a complete audit of the mine. The aim was to confirm the technical and economic viability of the mine, and also to ensure that it complies with the Equator Principles, which help lenders to assess a project’s environmental, economic and social impact and acceptability.
We considered a range of issues, including land acquisition, land and resource use, municipal infrastructure and services, public consultation, and economic benefits. We were also concerned with ensuring that the indigenous peoples and their territories were respected and adequately protected.
