Community projects
Other examples of community projects we have worked on include:
  • In the UK, we have developed relationships with schools seeking specialist school status in close proximity to our major work locations, bringing long-term benefits for schools, pupils and AMEC.
  • We have worked hard to minimise the environmental impact of the planned wind farm on the Scottish island of Lewis. We have also put in place a comprehensive community relations programme including employing a Gaelic speaker.
  • Our utilities division in the UK has tapped into a source of young talent in its work with gas supplier National Grid Transco, with two schemes to train and potentially employ long-term unemployed people and young offenders.
  • In Canada, we have a cross-functional, cross-divisional Aboriginal Business Initiative team with a mandate to share information on business opportunities, best practice and partnering with aboriginal communities.
  • Our environmental business in the US is a mentor to three small minority businesses under the Mentor-Protégé Programme sponsored by the US Department of Defense. The goal for the mentor is to help these businesses with technology transfer and business infrastructure.
  • AMEC is a major employer in Great Yarmouth, one of the UK’s more deprived areas. Our community projects include recycling resources, such as computers for schools and office furniture for small business start ups, and providing work experience for children.
