This year, our Continental Europe business has been integrated into the environmental indicator data collection for enforcement / incidents, environmental management systems and audit.

Enforcement incidents are defined as being where environmental harm or nuisance took place and the regulator took action against AMEC. Notifiable incidents relate to those where AMEC was required to contact the regulator but no further action was taken and non-notifiable incidents relate to incidents reported internally that were not required to be notified and where no regulatory action was taken.

AMEC received no environmental prosecutions during 2004, however our UK operations were served with two noise control notices under Section 60 of the Control of Pollution Act 1974. The London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea issued both noise control notices.
The first was issued to our AMEC Design and Management business in July 2004. The environmental health officer received a noise nuisance complaint from a local resident and a notice was issued to reinforce permitted working hours, which were strictly adhered to thereafter.
The second was issued to our AMEC Building and Facilities Services business in October 2004. The notice was issued following a complaint from a local resident regarding work being undertaken in the evening. A notice was issued to reinforce permitted working hours.

This year we have been able to integrate Continental Europe into our environmental management indicators. This means that 87% of our business reported operating under an ISO 14001 compliant system.
In 2004 we have seen an ever-increasing trend in our business to step beyond the mandatory requirement for an ISO 14001 compliant system. Many of our businesses have voluntarily opted to have their systems independently certified to ISO 14001. In particular, Continental Europe made significant strides towards independent verification throughout 2004 and will continue this programme in 2005. In the UK, our Internal Asset Management business was the latest to receive its accreditation.
| |

210 environmental audits were carried out in the UK and Asia Pacific, which means that 33% of AMEC sites were subject to at least one environmental audit compared to 32% in 2003, which is a marginal improvement. AMEC Americas recorded no environmental audits, although safety, health and environmental inspections were carried out. Continental Europe reported undertaking 127 audits during 2004.

In total, our business reported 18,547 tonnes in CO2 equivalent emissions in 2004 (excl. Continental Europe and Earth and Environmental).
We have endeavoured to collect energy information from the whole of our organisation where it is feasible to do so, although a number of our North American based facilities find this a difficult task, since they do not have access to energy meters or billed data (included in landlord rents).
Throughout 2005 we will concentrate our efforts on our most significant energy consumers where we have the most to gain in reducing energy costs and CO2 equivalent emissions.

This table uses the number of people reported as contributing to the consumption of the energy source directly. It therefore takes into account the percentage of the organisation reporting.

In total, our business reported managing 1,371,063 tonnes of waste compared to 811,618 tonnes for the same period last year. Increases are due to improvements in waste accounting, the nature of the projects, refurbishment and disposal of old equipment at fixed facilities. Unlike last year, only 19% of this waste went to landfill compared with 50% in 2003. This is a significant improvement in the management of waste.
The business also reported that 275,226 tonnes of material was taken for recycling, including hazardous wastes such as old oils, batteries and electrical equipment.
