Since joining AMEC in October 2006 I have been impressed with the commitment to sustainable development, both in the services we provide and the way in which we provide them. Issues such as climate change present AMEC with a real opportunity, to offer our customers low carbon energy solutions as well as the opportunity to improve our own carbon performance.

For me, sustainability is part of the day job, something that we all have an obligation to be concerned with in every aspect of our working and personal lives through the choices that we make. For AMEC our business guiding principles help to steer the company towards a more sustainable future and form the heart of the company's sustainability programme. It is my intention to continue to drive the organisation towards being an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable and solid company, which can contribute now and into the long term.
I am very pleased to report that there were no fatalities during the course of 2006, however our Lost Time Incidence Frequency Rate (LTIFR) increased and although our Total Recordable Case Frequency Rate (TRCFR) improved we did not reach our target which was very disappointing. We have more work to do to ensure that we achieve our targets in all areas where we do not reach the goals we set, this is fundamental to the future of our business.
As the Chairman of our sustainability programme it is my intention to conduct a thorough review of sustainability in AMEC to make sure we concentrate our efforts in the right places as our business evolves. I also want to engage AMEC operations more fully in the reporting and planning process so that next year we will see operational performance more fully discussed in our report. I will also make carbon emission management a clear priority within our business by measuring the level of our carbon emissions so we can make and demonstrate improvements.
We have learned from our experiences in 2006 and will use this learning to help us on our journey towards a more sustainable future.
