Sustainability performance report 2006

Health and Safety

Safety is paramount in all that AMEC does and is a critical issue both for AMEC and for its customers. As a key supplier, AMEC is in a position to help clients improve and maintain safety by assessing the potential consequences of its actions and of those with whom it works.

Given the diverse nature of our activities, there are many varied risks that arise. We operate processes to identify and control all risks but continue to give particular focus to key risk areas which include: working at height, moving plant and vehicles and working with live electrical equipment.

We achieved our goal of zero fatalities in 2006 and we will strive to maintain this level.

Progress was made in reducing accident rates in some areas in 2006, although in relation to Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate (LTIFR) the level remained the same as 2005 and the target of 10 per cent improvement from the previous year was not achieved. There was however an improvement in Total Recordable Case Frequency Rate (TRCFR) of two per cent, although the target of at least 10 per cent improvement was also not achieved.

By monitoring enforcement actions, we can identify specific failures in our management of health and safety and ensure appropriate improvement action is taken. High standards continue to be achieved in this area and in 2006 there were zero convictions for health and safety offences across all operations.

The number of days sickness absence per employee is reported as a measure of the effectiveness of initiatives to reduce sickness absence. Overall, there was a decrease in the average number of days of sickness absence in 2006.

AMEC's health and safety management systems are consistent with the internationally recognised standard, OHSAS 18001. Overall, 100 per cent of employees worked within an OHASA 18001 compliant Health and Safety Management System. This ensures there is a clear focus on the proper identification, assessment and management of risks during any activity in which AMEC is involved.
