Paris, France (1 July 2003) – AMEC plc, the international engineering services company, has today re-launched its operations in continental Europe under the AMEC SPIE brand, following the completion of its purchase of SPIE in March 2003.
The new ‘marque’ – which now covers an extensive network of 300 regional locations and specialised market-leading operations in the oil and gas, telecommunications, nuclear and transport industries, joins the AMEC and SPIE rail operations that have been operating under the AMEC SPIE name for the past year.
Welcoming the introduction of the new brand, Jean Monville, AMEC board director and AMEC SPIE chairman, said: “This new name we adopt is the fruit of the economic and financial partnership we have developed with AMEC over the last six years. AMEC SPIE reflects our membership of a strong international group offering new benefits in finance and expertise as well as potential synergies to be exploited."
In the areas of energy and communications, AMEC SPIE now will build on its European network of regional locations and specialist skills to offer its clients engineering solutions and overall services relying on multiple techniques. AMEC SPIE’s activities cover communications systems, electrical and mechanical engineering and heating and air conditioning systems, areas where its know-how has led to leadership positions in most of its markets in the industry, commercial, local and regional authorities, telecommunications, energy and transport sectors.
In the rail sector, AMEC SPIE has a network of European operations which specialise in developing rail infrastructure – track, overhead contact lines, control and communications, traction power and maintenance as well as turnkey projects.
AMEC’s construction business in France and elsewhere in Europe will continue to be carried out under the Spie Batignolles banner. AMEC has recently completed a strategic review of this business and has now received an offer from SPIE Batignolles’ executive management, in association with investors, to acquire 51 per cent of Spie Batignolles’ capital. A period of exclusive negotiation has now been entered into until 31 July 2003 to consider the terms of a potential sale and to undertake appropriate consultation with employees.
It is envisaged that AMEC will remain a minority shareholder in SPIE Batignolles for an agreed period in order to provide ongoing stability.
